The Katy Area Chamber of Commerce is widely recognized as a fine example of a healthy, growing, and prospering organization, formed to serve an equally flourishing local commercial market.
Historically, Katy was the hunting grounds of the Karankawa Indians, and consisted of open prairie, which was populated by herds of grazing buffalo. Only a handful of settlers could be found living in the area until 1895, when Katy suddenly received a large influx of new families who had decided that Cane Island, Texas, would make a good place to settle. The influx of settlers continued, including the family of the Wright brothers, those same brothers responsible for the first manned air flight many years later, indeed Katy is host to a museum which documents their accomplishments even now.
On September the 8th, 1900, a hurricane devastated the region, leaving many families homeless and facing a desperate predicament. Many of the town’s buildings were totally destroyed and many families were unable to face the prospect of rebuilding their farm holdings. As the town was rebuilt, more and more people drifted in from the destroyed farms, and took up work in the newly built commercial district, industry had arrived in Katy. The history of Katy is as diverse and fascinating as is the present day city itself, straddling three counties, it truly seems to take a little from each, mixing its own distinct flavor.
